Add Google Plus icon to Magento store

A few customers asked about adding Google +1 to their Magento stores, thus prompted us to write this short article.

It’s very easy, and Google provides a way for site owner to easily creating the +1 snippet.

Below is the screen shot that shows how we have the +1 snippet configured. Note that under the “Advanced options” we chose HTML5 Valid syntax, it’s because our site is built on HTML5–customers who purchased our Magento themes may wish to choose this too because all our themes used HTML5 doctype.

Configure Google +1

Once you’re done with the configuration, simply copy the code to your theme’s template file. In our case, we have the +1 icon placed at the header section, and we wanted the JS script placed in the bottom part of the page, so we placed the codes in both “header.phtml” and “footer.phtml” as seen below.

And see how it shows up on our site. Note that the icon changes color for logged in Google Plus’ user.

And the Google search result–if the user doesn’t already logged in to the Google account, she won’t be able to see the +1 icon.

Final Note

Google plus has not opened for business yet, but it doesn’t stop website owner from using it. All you need is create a Google plus with personal profile, and add your website to the profile.
